The SEND ministries of First UMC Marengo are focused on our church’s presence in the community, connecting gifts with places of need, and opportunities for mission/service.
SEND Opportunities to Serve
This is an organization that works with persons in need in Cedar Rapids. They have a community garden, meals program, youth activities, etc. We have helped to collect items, serve meals, and provide resources for this United Methodist ministry.
Women at the Well:
This is a congregation of the United Methodist church inside the walls of the Iowa Correctional Facility for Women in Mitchellville, Iowa. Each year, we work to collect clothing and toiletry items for the “Stepping Out” clothes closet. We also have begun a deeper relationship and have travelled to worship with them. Sign up if you want to be a part of this outreach effort.
Marengo Food Bank:
We regularly collect non-perishable food items for the area food bank. Volunteers could help deliver our items to the Presbyterian Church and can also help sort and deliver items in partnership with the food bank volunteer system.
Community Thank-you Lunch:
In the spring, we invite local area volunteers and leaders to join us for lunch so that we can say, ‘thank you.” This ministry involves inviting the guests and planning a meal for the event. It is a short term ministry opportunity.
We want to build a community volunteer database to connect the gifts and abilities of our community with needs of local agencies, the school, and our churches. Our volunteer fair at the church is one way we want to begin to build names. We need someone who is comfortable with the computer to help us keep track of names and to search for people who have gifts and skills when a project arises.
Parade (and Special Event) Presence:
During 2012, we made our first appearance in the Marengo July 3 parade. Being present in the community also means that people know we are here and that we celebrate what they are celebrating. Volunteers on this team would be willing to ride in the parade, organize a driver and find a trailer.
We want to have more dinners at the church to support the community and to welcome folks into our doors. We currently host a Hamball Supper to benefit the youth and are working on an Election Day lunch meal. We grill at the Big G at least once a year. If you would like to help serve and/or organize these meals, sign up!
Election Day Luncheon
Help with other community events requiring volunteers
Twice in the past, we have sent crews to sites of flooding or storms to help clean up and provide meals. In Iowa, we never know when disaster might strike, but this team would be willing to give a day to go and help when it does. People of all skills are welcome to be a part of this group. Being on this list means that you would be contacted if one of these opportunities to serve arises.
School Buddies with Big Brothers/Big Sisters:
Our local elementary school is in need of buddies to sit and read and play games with elementary students. This would be a regular commitment for an hour each week with one student, during school hours. There are forms to fill out from BB/BS in order to be placed in the school.
