The CARE ministries of First UMC Marengo are focused on meeting people where they are and sharing the love of God with them.
CARE Opportunities to Serve:
Visitation of Homebound Members:
We have a number of folks in our church who are no longer able to regularly attend worship and activities. If you would like to serve on the visitation team, you will be trained and will be sent out in pairs to visit our brothers and sisters.
Data Entry for Membership Information:
In order to help us remember birthdays and anniversaries and other events, we need a few volunteers who are willing to help us track down and then enter information into our computer database. This is a job that can be done in your free time, but does require some computer skills.
As a part of our “18 month Ministry,” we regularly send cards and greetings to people connected with our congregation. This service opportunity would mean that you sign up for a month at a time of service to send the greetings for that month. Cards and stamps can be provided out of our funds and/or donated by you if you choose.
As a part of our “18 month Ministry,” casserole makers prepare ready to bake frozen dinners that are placed in our church freezer. These are then ready to send out at a moments notice for those who have been in the hospital and/or need extra encouragement.
These are organized by the women of the church, but all are welcome to help. The team sets out refreshments and coffee for the funeral and will also prepare a hot or cold meal at the familiy’s request for those in attendance. Volunteers are needed to serve, prepare food, and wash dishes.
This opportunity is to prepare and serve refreshments that are available after worship.
We use ushers both on Sunday mornings for worship, but also for special events and services at the church. Ushers are responsible for arriving 20 minutes early to greet people upon their arrival and following worship upon their departure. For special events like funerals, weddings, and concerts, ushers will also be trained in location of the fuse boxes, operating the lights and sound system, and will be available if there is an emergency. You can choose to serve only on Sunday mornings or to make yourself available for other events.
We are looking for people who would be willing to help us be more hospitable for guests. Your job would be to create baskets for the bathroom with mints/tissue/feminine products/hand santizer/etc and/or entry-way greetings baskets with helpful information and mints and such… Be creative, and then keep these items refilled as needed.
When we have events at the church like concerts, speakers or meetings, it would be nice to provide child care in our nursery. Those who volunteered in this area would have to pass a background check in order to serve. They would be placed on a list to call if such an event is happening at the church and child care was needed.
Greeters have typically served only on Sunday mornings, but we would like for people to serve for other special events, also. Greeters welcome folks as they enter, try to get information about visitors to share with the church, and could also be a part of a team that sends a follow-up post card to thank guests for coming. Greeters should return to the foyer during the last hymn in order to greet folks as they leave the sanctuary.
